 FRANKLIN E. WALES

Though Franklin E. Wales was born in Conway, NH, he has been a transplanted Floridian for over a decade.  He currently lives in Palm Beach County with his beautiful wife, four cats and one very ugly dog.  Throughout his career he has written and published numerous pieces of both fiction, and nonfiction.  BOOGER is his first novel.

His celebrity interviews have ranged from the well-known to the unknown, from directors and actors to singers, songwriters and musicians in nearly every genre imaginable.  His fiction, however, has always had its roots grounded deep in horror.  In a recent interview with Buried.com he credits his mother for that.  “She says when I was very young I used to pitch a fit if she put me to bed before The Twilight Zone came on.  She’d always let me watch it, even though I woke up screaming with nightmares later that night!  I like to say I was weaned on The Twilight Zone.”

The decision to self publish was one in which Frank took his time making.  “Today’s self publishing is a long way from the old Vanity Press world,” he says.  “Back then you cut a large check and you got a box full of books, and it really died there.  Your market only reached as far as your daily life.

“Today the overhead is smaller; the technology better and thanks to the internet, the market is worldwide.

Frank chose to self publish using the POD (Print On Demand) method after talking to a good many authors who had tried other avenues for their work.  “With POD there is virtually no overhead, no big check to get started.  Books are printed as needed so there is no overstock.  You won’t have a 10,000 copy first run, but you won’t have cases of books in your attic for your grandkids to throw out, either!”

He quickly learned that an author can be picked up by a large publishing house and still quickly sink out of sight.  It all depends on how much push the house puts behind you and your work.  “With self publishing it’s all up to you.  Without the large money up front, it leaves more for marketing.  If you’ve got a good book, and people know about it, they will buy it. It’s a lot of work, but it puts your future a little more in your own hands.”

It’s the big publishers that get the books into the stores, but advertising budgets are always tight.  If the choice is between an untried new author, and a well known name, the new guy usually falls off the screen.  Frank has developed a fairly large grassroots marketing campaign planned with book signings, advertising and interviews.  He hopes to move enough copies that a major house might take notice, and put some money into promoting him down the line.

As for his ultimate goal, Frank says, “Sure I want to scare you a little with my work.  But let’s be honest.  The real reason to read a book is entertainment.  I hope if you are having a rough day you can pick up my book and maybe forget about life for awhile.  I hope to entertain you.”

That seems to be a fair bet with critics saying things like:

“BOOGER is compelling prose, provocative dark fiction, and an entertainingly good time. Fans of sinister fantasy should not miss it---it's in a class by itself!”- Tim Ritter, Filmmaker and Author of THE HAMMER WILL FALL

“Franklin E. Wales’ BOOGER isn't so much a terrifying story as it is a livable nightmare. The story oozes with nasty goodness and I can't wait for the next offering! Be careful after opening this one... you better hope Mr. Wales isn't under your bed!”- David Hayes, Author of MUDDLED MIND and star of BACK WOODS

“Despite horror fiction and film being more popular than ever these days, it seems that the ‘breakthrough’ author in the genre is getting rarer and rarer, despite the successful Leisure line that spotlights icons like Richard Laymon and Jack Ketchum...That may change with Franklin E. Wales’ new novel, BOOGER. Here is a new and original voice from the ultimate fan-cum-artist.  BOOGER is a challenging novel told in the simple, down-home style of Joe R. Landsdale. Think Stephen King surprises, Jack Ketchum terror, and Robert Bloch suspense and you have a small part of what Frank Wales delivers here---this BOOGER is a very special treat, worth a pickin’!”  - Buried.com
