In a small Tennessee town at the height of the great depression a madman, who the papers are calling the Scarecrow, is hunting children. Sheriff John Grant realizing that he is in over his head, calls upon the help of a friend from his days as a Chicago street cop.
Dr. Benjamin Bones Dyer is an old black man who in his youth had a powerful gift. He was able to see the dead. In his old age, his gift has faded and nearly disappeared, but as he travels south to help his friend, his gift is returning.
Just as Benjamin arrives, two more girls are taken and Benjamin begins to see the spirit's of the Scarecrow's victims, even as their decapatated bodies are being left at crossroads and sitting in orchards.
Meanwhile the nine year old Brother of one of the dead girl's launches his own investigation and gets closer to the Scarecrow than he ever imagined.
