Crows at Twilight, an Omnibus of Tales, by Gregory Miller

Book Review by Bill Johnson

Have you read this book?

Shades of the Twilight Zone! Crows at Twilight is an assortment of tales, some very dark, some not so dark and others are reminiscent of fairy tales were told as small children.

It was Ted, out in the woods, who picked on it first, and when he did he came running from among the trees, waving and wringing his hands. Everyone stopped and stared, and when he got close he called out "There's a child in there! I can hear her crying!"

The search began immediately.

"No way anyone's in here" said Mike, turning to Ted as they weaved their way through the trunks and branches."You sure it wasn't a Barn Owl? They sound kinda like tikes when they're riled."

"Hey now, I know what I heard I know what I heard," Ted grumbled. (Crows at Twilight. Miller, 2013, p128)

While I'm not a big fan of horror stories, Crows at Twilight held some very good stories as well as some not so good. There's one about a cat whose ghost returns, one about a town where the people turn into trees when they die as well as one about an old woman who turns into a spider.

Mr. Miller's style reminded me a lot of the old Twilight zone episodes and as I said I'm not real big fan of horror stories but I give the author credit for bringing his characters to life in a way that made you want to wish that some were true and at the same time glad that some were not. I'd give it three stars.
